Asmanex Twisthaler (corticosteroids) is used to control and prevent symptoms of wheezing and shortness of breath caused by asthma. It works by reducing the irritation and swelling of the airways. Controlling symptoms of breathing problems can decrease time lost at work or school. It is used in adults and children 12 years of age and older.

Use Asmanex Twisthaler exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets.

Asmanex comes in a powder form that is preloaded with a special inhaler device (twisthaler). The device will deliver a measured dose of mometasone as a fine powder spray each time you use the inhaler.

You may or may not be able to feel or taste this powder in your mouth while using the inhaler. It may take up to 2 weeks before your symptoms improve. Keep using the medication as directed, and call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after one week of treatment.

To help prevent thrush (a yeast infection in the mouth or throat), rinse your mouth with water without swallowing after using your inhaler.

Keep the cap on your inhaler when not in use. Keep the inhalation aerosol canister away from open flame or high heat. The canister may explode if it gets too hot. Do not puncture or burn an empty inhaler canister.

Please do not wash your inhaler device or allow it to get wet. Wipe the mouthpiece with a clean, dry tissue or cloth.

Before using Asmanex Twisthaler, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: current/past infections, bone loss, eye problems, diabetes, decreased adrenal gland function and if you are allergic to it or have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.

If you have switched from a corticosteroid taken by mouth to Asmanex Twisthaler within the past 12 months, or if you have been using this product in higher-than-usual doses for a long time, it may be more difficult for your body to respond to physical stress. 

Avoid contact with people with infections that may spread to others. Asmanex Twisthaler may mask signs of infection. It can make you more likely to get infections or worsen any current infections. Consult your doctor if you have been exposed to an infection or for more details.

The most common side effects of Asmanex Twisthaler include the following:

• increased sinus allergy (runny nose, stuffy nose, sinus pain),
• sore throat,
• nosebleed,
• headache,
• muscle or bone pain,
• back pain,
• flu symptoms,
• upset stomach,
• menstrual pain,
• hoarseness, and
• deepened voice

Tell the doctor if you have any side effect that bothers you or does not go away.

Are asthma attacks treated with Asmanex Twisthaler?

Asmanex Twisthaler is not a rescue medicine for asthma attacks. Use only fast-acting inhalation medicine for an attack. 
 
How should you store the Asmanex Twisthaler?

Store Asmanex Twisthaler at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. When you first open the foil pouch and remove the inhaler device, write the date on the device. Throw away the inhaler when the dose counter shows "00."

What should you avoid while using Asmanex Twisthaler?

Avoid being near people who are sick or have infections. Call your doctor for preventive treatment if you are exposed to chickenpox or measles. These conditions can be serious or even fatal in people using Asmanex.
