What is Climara?

Climara is a skin patch containing the estrogen estradiol. Estrogens are female sex hormones which are produced by the ovaries and necessary for many body processes. Climara skin patches are used to treat symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes and vaginal changes including vaginal burning, dryness and irritation. Climara may also be prescribed to prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis or to treat ovarian disorders.

• Self-examine your breasts for lumps each moth and have regular mammograms while taking this medication. Check your progress with a doctor regularly.

Make sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• Your medical history especially of liver disease, vaginal bleeding, bleeding disorders, blood disorders, heart attack, stroke, cancer, blood clots, heart disease, jaundice, diabetes, lupus, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, thyroid disorder, kidney disease, asthma, epilepsy or other seizures, migraines, lupus, porphyria, endometriosis, uterine fibroid tumors, gallbladder disease or high or low levels of calcium in your blood.
• Your personal and family history of angioedema and coronary artery disease.

Also be aware that:

• You should not use Climara if you are pregnant. Use effective birth control while using this medication.
• You should not use Climara if you are breast-feeding. Estradiol can pass into breast milk.

Common Climara side effects may include but are not limited to:

• Irritation or redness where your patch was applied.
• Signs of fluid retention such as swelling or rapid weight gain.
• Headaches, back pain or breast pain.
• Cold symptoms including sore throat, sinus pain and stuffy nose.
• Changes to your menstrual periods, vaginal itching or discharge or breakthrough bleeding.
• Nausea, vomiting, bloating or stomach cramps.
• Thinning scalp hair.

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects of Climara:

• Swelling or tenderness in your stomach.
• Jaundice.
• Unusual vaginal bleeding or pelvis pain.
• Breast lumps.
• Memory problems, confusion or unusual behavior.
• Symptoms of a heart attack such as chest pain or pressure, nausea, sweating or a pain spreading to your jaw or shoulder.
• Signs of increased blood pressure such as severe headache, blurred vision, anxiety, nosebleeds or a pounding in your neck or ears.
• Symptoms of a stroke such as sudden severe headache, slurred speech, vision problems, balance problems or a sudden numbness or weakness especially on one side of your body.
• Signs of a blood clot such as vision loss, stabbing chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing up blood or pain or warmth in one or both legs.
• Symptoms of high levels of calcium in your blood such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, increased thirst or urination, muscle weakness, bone pain or a lack of energy.
• Signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing or a swelling of your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if my Climara patch falls off?
