What is Lumigan?

Lumigan eye drops are prescribed to treat certain types of glaucoma and other causes of high pressure inside the eye. Lumigan contains the medication bimatoprost and works by regulating and lowering the pressure in the eye by increasing the amount of fluid which drains out of the eye. Lumigan can also be prescribed to treat eyelash hypotrichosis. It can be used on the upper eyelashes to increase their growth, making them longer, thicker and darker.

• Lumigan is normally used every evening with the typical dose being one drop into each affected eye.
• If you wear contact lenses, remove them before using these eye drops and wait at least 15 minutes before replacing them.
• Wash your hands before using Lumigan.
• While tilting your head back, gently pull down your lower eyelid in order to make a small pocket. Look upwards and away from the eye dropper and squeeze out a drop.
• Tilt your head down and close your eyes. Use your fingers to gently press the inside corner of your eyes to prevent any liquid from draining away. Keep your eyes closed for 2 to 3 minutes.
• If you use any other eye drops, wait at least five minutes before applying other medications.
• Do not touch the tip of the eye dropper as a contaminated dropper may cause an eye infection.
• If your Lumigan has particles in it, or has changed color, do not use the medication and use a new bottle.
• Lumigan is most effective when it is taken regularly. Try to take this medication at the same time each day. Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or worsens.

Make sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• If you have any drug or other allergies.
• Which other prescription and non-prescription medications you currently take.
• Your medical history especially of retinal detachment, liver disease, kidney disease, eye infection, eye swelling, eye surgery or any other injury affecting the lens of your eye.
• If you are pregnant, planning on pregnancy or breast feeding.

Also be aware that:

• Lumigan should not be used by anyone younger than 16.
• Lumigan may cause a gradual change to your eye color or an increased thickness or growth to your eyelashes. These changes occur slowly and they may not be noticeable for months or years. These changes may be permanent even once your treatment ends.

Common Lumigan side effects may include but are not limited to:

• Burning, stinging, irritation or redness of the eye.
• Dry or watering eyes.
• Increased sensitivity to light.
• Over a period of months to years, Lumigan may cause brown discoloration of the eye. If the medication is only used in one eye, only that eye may change color.
• Increase in the thickness, length, number and darkness of eyelashes. These changes may be permanent.

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects of Lumigan:

• Eye swelling or pain.
• Swelling or redness of the eyelids.
• Vision changes.
• Signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing or a swelling of your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Lumigan?

Skip your missed dose and take the medication at the next scheduled time. Do not take extra medication.

Does Lumigan help with eyelash growth?

Lumigan may be prescribed to treat eyelash hypotrichosis which is a condition indicated by an inadequate amount of eyelashes. It can be used on the upper eyelashes to increase their growth, making them longer, thicker and darker.
