What is Restasis?

Restasis and the generic alternative cyclosporine ophthalmic are eye drops prescribed to treat chronic dry eye caused by inflammation by decreasing swelling and increasing tear production in the eyes. Restasis and the generic alternative both come in individual 0.4ml vials of 0.05% strength. Cyclosporine ophthalmic is also available in a 3ml bottle.

• Restasis eye drops are usually used twice daily, twelve hours apart for each eye.
• Wash your hands and remove contact lenses before using Restasis. Wait fifteen minutes after using before replacing your contact lenses.
• Turn the bottle or single-dose vial upside down a few times in order to shake it up. It should appear uniform, white and opaque.
• Slightly tilt back your head and pull down your lower eyelid to create a pocket. Hold the vial or dropper directly over your eye and squeeze a drop out into the pocket created.
• Close your eye for two to three minutes with your head tipped downwards. Apply gently pressure to your eye duct with a finger to stop any liquid draining out.
• Wipe any excess liquid from your face and repeat with your other eye if necessary. Wash your hands once you have finished applying this medication.
• Do not let the tip of the vial touch your eye or any other surface before use to make sure it is kept clean. Discard each vial after use.
• Restasis is most effective when it is taken regularly. Try to take this medication at the same time each day. Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or worsens.
• If you are using any other eye drops or artificial tears, use them at least fifteen minutes before or after using Restasis.

Make sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• If you have any drug or other allergies.
• Which other prescription and non-prescription medications you currently take.
• Your medical history especially of eye infections.
• If you are pregnant, planning on pregnancy or breast feeding.

Also be aware that:

• This medication should not be used in anyone younger than 16.

Common Restasis side effects may include but are not limited to:

• Eye discomfort, redness or itching.
• Feeling as if something is in your eye.
• Temporary blurred vision.
• Headaches.

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects of Restasis:

• Signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing or a swelling of your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Restasis?

If you miss a dose of this medication, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.

Can I use Restasis while using contact lenses?

You will need to remove your contact lenses before applying Restasis and should not replace them for fifteen minutes after using this medication.
