What is Strattera?

Strattera (atomoxetine hydrochloride) is a medication prescribed to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Atomoxetine hydrochloride is thought to work by restoring the balance of natural neurotransmitters within your brain. Strattera should be taken as part of a treatment plan which may also include social, psychological and other treatments to help increase your ability to stay focused, concentrate, pay attention and to stop fidgeting.

• Strattera is typically taken either once or twice a day. In the morning and then in the late afternoon if taken a second time.
• Strattera should be taken with a full glass of water and can be taken with or without food.

• Your doctor may want to check your progress often or test your heart rate, blood pressure, height or weight.
• This medication is most effective when it is taken regularly.

• Strattera can cause new or worsening psychosis especially in those with a history of mental illness, depression or bipolar.
• You should not use Strattera if you have taken a MAO inhibitor during the last 14 days. This includes isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine, and others.
• Some young people may have suicidal thoughts when initially taking Strattera or when the dose is changed. Stay alert to changes in your mood or symptoms and inform your doctor if you have these thoughts.

Common Strattera side effects may include but are not limited to:

• Stomach upset, nausea or vomiting.
• Constipation.
• Tiredness, drowsiness or trouble sleeping.
• Weight loss or loss of appetite.
• Dry mouth.
• Dizziness.
• A decrease in sexual desire or sexual ability.
• For women, menstrual cramps or missed or irregular periods.

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects of atomoxetine hydrochloride:

• Raised blood pressure.
• Fainting.
• Unusually fast or an irregular heartbeat.
• In males including teens and young boys, an erection in painful or lasts for over four hours.
• Difficulty urinating.
• Numbness or tingling.
• Signs of liver damage such as persistent nausea, persistent vomiting, loss of appetite, jaundice, dark urine, stomach pain or abdominal pain.
• Signs of heart attack or stroke such as shortness of breath, unusual sweating, slurred speech, confusion, weakness on one side of the body, sudden vision changes or pain in your chest, jaw or left arm.
• Signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing or a swelling of your face, lips or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Strattera?

If you miss a dose of this medication, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.
