What is Symbicort?

Symbicort Inhaler is a combination inhaler containing both budesonide and formoterol and is used to prevent and control the symptoms of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) such as shortness of breath or wheezing. Budesonide is a corticosteroid which reduces the swelling and irritation of the airways whereas formoterol is a long-acting beta agonist which opens the airways in your lungs. Symbicort should be used regularly to make breathing easier. It does not work immediately and should not be used to relieve sudden asthma or bronchospasm attacks.

• Prime the inhaler by spraying it away from your face if this is your first use, if you have not used it for more than a week or if the inhaler was dropped.
• Shake the inhaler well for five seconds before each inhalation. This medication is usually taken twice daily, twelve hours apart, in the morning and evening.
• If your prescribed dose is two puffs or if you use any other inhalers, wait at least one minute between puffs. Use Symbicort after any other inhalers.
• To prevent yeast infections, rinse your mouth out with water without swallowing after each use of Symbicort.
• Clean your inhaler with a dry cloth at least once a week without taking your inhaler apart.
• Ask your doctor how using Symbicort affects your dosing schedule of any other inhalers or corticosteroids as you may need to taper off or reduce the use of other medications.
• Symbicort is most effective when it is taken regularly. Try to take this medication at the same times each day. It can take up to a week before your symptoms begin to improve. Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or worsens.
• Symbicort is not a rescue medication and should not be used to relieve sudden asthma or bronchospasm attacks.

• Symbicort may temporarily slow down a child’s growth. Regularly see your doctor so your child’s height can be checked.

• Headaches.
• Throat irritation.
• Stomach upset.

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects of Symbicort:

• Sudden severe worsening of breathing problems immediately after use. Use your quick-relief inhaler and contact your doctor if this occurs.
• Raised blood pressure. Check your blood pressure regularly.
• White patches in your mouth or on your tongue.
• Signs of infection such as persistent sore throat or fever.
• Mental or mood changes such as nervousness.

• Muscle cramps or shaking.
